Press Release

  • The BMW 6-series Gran Coup.
  • Beauty and elegance ex works
  • Sportiness and individuality from HAMANN-Motorsport
Even the standard BMW 6-series Gran Coup' is amongst the most elegant luxury cars. Noble lines and bewitching proportions make the Coup' known at BMW as the F06 one of most attractive cars ever to roll off the production lines at BMW. So it was no mean feat for the designers at HAMANN-Motorsport to give the vehicle more glamour, and just the right amount of sportiness and individuality. But with their feel for shape and more than 25 years of experience in customising luxury cars, the specialists from the southern German town of Laupheim have managed to pull together a comprehensive customisation package ' striking alloy wheels, a stylish aerodynamic profile as well as a gnarly sounding sports exhaust are just a few highlights from the extensive HAMANN range.

The aerodynamic components alone show HAMANNs feel for clever customisation of the Gran Coup'. The newly designed front continues the BMW design language and supplies an extra dose of sportiness. HAMANN have replaced the standard components with a front grille with two integrated LED day lights, a new front bumper and a lighter carbon bonnet. To customise the rear, HAMANN have fitted a lift reducing Spoiler, a tailgate cover and a new bumper with an integrated diffuser to take the HAMANN 4-sports-pipe mufflers. The discreet side skirts tie the front and rear together visually and reduce the airflow between the axles.

The range of wheels available is geared completely towards the customer for the 6 series. Whether strikingly sporty or elegant and classy, HAMANN offers various wheel styles and sizes. Under the name ANNIVERSARY EVO HYPER BLACK, a monoblock 21 inch alloy wheel is available. Modern production methods and use of special aluminium alloys give this wheel the most strength of the least weight. The recommended wheel / tyre combination for this exclusive wheel design combines the size 9Jx21 inch with tyre size 255/30ZR21 on the front. At the back 11,0Jx21 inch wheels link up with 295/ 25ZR21 size tyres.

The lowering kit adds a sporty touch. Four advanced springs lower the centre of gravity of the Gran Coup' by up to 30mm. This gives a noticeable lift to handling. But it's not just aerodynamics and wheels which can be customised by HAMANN.

As an option, HAMANN can completely re-configure the interior of the BMW 6-series making it a VIP lounge. Piano Gloss, wood, leather or Alcantara ' everything to make the heart beat faster is available on request. From personalised floor mats to anodised aluminium pedals to a full leather interior everything is produced in hand crafted precision, individually designed and integrated into the car by experts.

Rumors: BMW to Reveal 1-Series Grand Turismo at the Paris Motor Show [with Spy Video]

There's a lot going on at BMW these days but no project is bound to be more divisive than the firm's first front-wheel drive model, the upcoming 1-Series Grand Turismo, which was previously known by the acronym F.A.S.T., which stands for Family Activity Sports Tourer.
Citing inside sources, the crew over at the BMW Blog reported that the 1-Series GT would make its world premiere at the upcoming 2012 Paris Motor Show this fall.

BMW launches M5 Sport saloon

BMW has launched its new M5 sports saloon at the 11th Auto Expo in New Delhi. Like all previous M5s, the new car's styling is subtle but aggressive in its details, most notably the lower air intakes three gaping ducts to flow cool air into the radiator, oil cooler and turbochargers. 19-inch alloy wheels come as standard fitment.

The M5 features a twin-turbo, 4.4-litre V8 that offers 552bhp and 69.4kgm of max torque, and the sports saloon can hit 100kph in 4.4 seconds, and 200kph in 13sec (manufacturers claims). The new M5 gets a power boost of 10 percent and torque figures are up by 30 percent compared to the previous-generation, V10-powered E60 M5.

The transmission is a seven-speed, dual-clutch unit with steering-wheel-mounted paddle-shifters, which drives through a new Active M differential with electronically-controlled, multi-plate, limited-slip differential. Depending on the driving situation the diff can lock between 0 and 100 per cent, says BMW.

An M-specific chassis set-up includes M-tuned Servotronic steering, cockpit-adjustable dynamic damping and stability control with an M Dynamic setting. Steering wheel buttons that can be programmed with chassis, engine and diff settings can now memorise two individual set-ups as compared to the single setting option on the earlier M Drive button.

The all-new BMW M5 has been priced at Rs 95.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Mini officially launched in India

mini launching at auto expo
Iconic British car-maker Mini has finally entered the Indian car market. The BMW-owned manufacturer will bring in four models, namely the Cooper, Cooper S, Cooper Convertible and Cooper S Countryman into India as completely built units (CBUs). The Mini range will be sold through three exclusive dealerships Deutsche Motoren and Bird Automotive in New Delhi and Infinity Cars in Mumbai.

The Cooper hatchback is the most affordable car in the line-up. However, with an asking price of Rs 24.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Cooper is by no means cheap. Styling harks back to the original design; its classic yet looks contemporary at the same time. There are plenty of retro touches inside the cabin as well such as the large circular dials for the speedometer and tachometer. While the Mini Cooper can seat four, its small dimensions and three-door body style make it a car best suited to two occupants. The Mini Cooper comes with a 1.6-litre petrol engine that is good for 122bhp at 6000rpm and 16.3kgm of torque at 4250rpm. Those wanting more power can opt for the Mini Cooper S that features the same engine but with a twin-scroll turbocharger. Power is 184bhp at 5500rpm while max torque of 24.47kgm is produced between 1600-5000rpm. The Mini Cooper S has been priced at Rs 27.9 lakh.

The third model in the Mini line-up is the Cooper Convertible. The convertible adds the joy of open-top motoring to typical Mini charm. But given Indias extreme weather conditions, the Convertibles fabric roof could prove impractical. The Convertible comes powered by the same 1.6-litre, 122bhp petrol engine that does duty on the Mini Cooper.  Priced at Rs 29.99 lakh, the Cooper Convertible is still the cheapest convertible on sale in India today.

The Mini that makes most sense for India is the Cooper S Countryman. It features five doors with decent space for four occupants so it is sure to find favour with family buyers. Moreover, its raised ride height will do a better job at dealing with pothole-laden Indian roads. The Countryman costs Rs 31.99 lakh and uses a 184bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged engine.

Mini has not announced any plans yet of brining in its diesel powerplant, however the manufacturer has confirmed all India-bound cars will come with six-speed automatic transmissions.

FIRST DRIVE New BMW 3-series review, test drive

bmw 3 series
Testing a mainstream production saloon on a Formula 1 race track doesnt serve any real purpose except to tell you how quick you (and the car) really are. You dont just cruise from apex to apex but end up driving the wheels off whatever youre piloting. So the first couple of hot laps of the Catalunya circuit in Spain were enough to reveal how far forward BMW has taken the new 3-series driving dynamics and why it is still the master of the class.
bmw 3 series
The incredible chassis balance and the sheer fluency with which the new 3-series handles makes you flip for it instantly. Its the delightfully neutral attitude through corners that makes the 3-series feel so special. Turn-in is deliciously sharp and the complete lack of understeer is just astonishing. With Sport+ mode selected, you can play with the throttle to tighten your line. And then theres the steering. Unlike its predecessors, the new 3s steering has a natural, fluid feel that is hard to associate with electrically powered units. It may not weigh up as much as you would like when you lean into corners but the delicate balance between effort and accuracy is what makes this steering truly brilliant.
bmw 3 series interior
But the true genius of the 3-series lies in its ability to mix sportiness and comfort in equal measure and without any compromise. And the key to this is actually a button which resides on the centre console. Standard on every new 3-series is the Driving Experience Control system BMW-speak for a wide range of driving modes you can choose from. This system, though already available on the 5- and 7-series, is further enhanced for its 3-series debut by also offering an Eco Pro mode, which tweaks the throttle map to eke out the best fuel economy.
The first thing that you become acutely aware of is the fantastic ride quality. Over uneven tarmac, in Comfort mode, the 3-series feels like its gliding, the quiet interiors adding to the almost eerie feeling. We are guessing this will be the default setting when it comes to India, but if you are fortunate enough to live in a place where the roads are open and good then the Sport and Sport+ modes are the ones to play with.
bmw 3 series steering
In Sport mode, the 3-series instantly feels more responsive. The steering, throttle and gearbox feel sharper and this sense is further enhanced in Sport+ mode, where the traction control switches to a more entertaining setting. Whats amazing is that, except over sharp ridges and bumps, the new 3-series is pretty comfy even in the stiffest Sport+ setting. The other revelation is the latest-generation run-flat tyres, which are no longer ride-corrupting, and this should finally silence the critics; us included.
BMW made available two of the four engine options at the International launch, and both of these are expected in India. The 320d gets the familiar 1995cc motor developing 181bhp from the previous 3-series, but its the 328i which gets an all-new, twin-scroll turbo, direct-injection petrol engine. This compact 2-litre, in-line four, replaces the naturally aspirated 3-litre, in-line six. It develops 242bhp, which means the 328i is marginally less powerful than the outgoing 330i, but it produces 16 percent more torque and being 45kg lighter, its actually quicker. Also a first on the 3-series is the same ZF eight-speed gearbox with paddle-shifters which debuted on the 5-series (though it was first seen on the 760Li), with an auto stop-start function as an option.
bmw 3 series expo
We first had a go in the 328i and immediately noticed theres virtually no turbo lag. This engine pulls cleanly and hard from low revs and the quick-shifting eight-speeder complements the wide torque spread to give an instant burst of acceleration at any speed. In Sport and Sport+ mode, the transmission hangs onto lower gears much longer but even in the Comfort setting the brilliant engine-gearbox combo makes light work of any drive. If theres a fault its the bland-sounding exhaust note and that ultimate creaminess at high revs you can only get with a six-cylinder. For that, you will have to wait for the 335i which will follow the 328i into India.
As youd expect, the 320d is slower on paper than the 328i and this was most obvious on the Catalunya track. But on the road, the diesel 3-series packed quite a punch and the strong mid-range makes it feel more potent. At high revs the engine has that familiar gruffness and is not the most silent of diesels but thats not to say the noise is obtrusive.
The cabin is also a step up from before with a noticeable increase in legroom at the rear and better overall comfort, but it doesnt wow you like the rest of the car. Though the interiors have a sharper design and quality details abound, it has the same understated feel that is a bit too functional. The dashboard is more driver-oriented than before, with the centre console tilting slightly inwards, and there are lots of bits borrowed from the 5-series like the switchgear and other controls.
In fact, underpinning the brand new chassis is a lot of 5-series architecture. The 3-series gets double wishbones in the front for the first time and a multi-link Z-axle at the rear. The platform has also been engineered to accommodate four-wheel-drive variants.
If the way the 3-series drives doesnt excite you enough then the styling certainly will. This sixth-generation (F30) 3-series is bigger and more muscular than before and you just cant miss the distinctive bonnet that bulges forward, or the stunning headlights which extend inwards to meet the squat kidney grille. Double swage lines that run under the base of the window and along the door-handle line are another great piece of design detail. The rear looks more straightforward but the wider track gives it a nice, squat stance.
It was really hard to fault the new 3-series but a more critical evaluation can only be expected when the car hits Indian shores before the middle of 2012. For BMWs rivals, thats a breather they need to make the most of. For customers its time to muster the approximately Rs 26 lakh asking price for the base 320d or around Rs 35 lakh (both ex-showroom) if you fancy the top-spec 328i. This is one car thats going to be hard to beat.

Work underway on new BMW R 1200 GS

BMW Motorrad is readying a major upgrade to its top-selling R 1200 GS adventure touring motorcycle, which is still as far away from launch as 2013.
The final GS is similar to the model illustrated here, and shall sport revised, modern styling with a sharper, more aggressive snout apart from other substantial cosmetic changes. Refreshed instruments and an altered, adjustable wind deflector will be a part of the new model, and you can expect a big jump up in features, apart from a bi-colour seat.
Amongst the more major changes will be the GS ditching its signature air-cooled engine for an all-new liquid-cooled, Boxer twin, with the driveshaft mounted on the left of the motorcycle, the opposite side as on the current model. Although engine capacity remains a question mark, the cylinder intake ports will come in from above instead of behind and the exhaust pipes will also have new routing.
The new go-anywhere GS can be expected to enjoy a host of electronic rider assist functions, including electronic suspension control, plus an ABS brake system, for which the new front brake calipers will be radial mounted.

BMW unveils 6-series Gran Coupe

BMW has unveiled the 6-series Gran Coup. This new four-door coupe will rival the Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS. The 6-series Gran Coupe joins the existing two-door coup and convertible in an expanded range of 6-series models aiming to attract buyers who place greater emphasis on outright style than practicality.
Stylistically, the Gran Coup is identical to the 6-series coup and convertible from its forward-leaning kidney grille through to the upper trailing edge of its windscreen. However, it adopts a longer and flatter roof structure, substantial B-pillars and two conventionally front-hinged rear doors. To help provide the Gran Coup with an added touch of coup-like style, all four doors are frameless. With a length of 5007mm, width of 1894mm and height of 1392mm, the 6-series Gran Coup is 112mm longer than the 6-series coup and convertible. Despite its stylistic links to the two-door 6-series, the Gran Coup rides on an altered platform with a 113mm longer wheelbase (2968mm) the same as the 5-series saloons.
The Gran Coup will initially be available in global markets with three engine options, all mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The entry-level 640i Gran Coup runs a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six with 316bhp. The 650i receives a turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 packing 444bhp. Also available in select markets will be the 640d Gran Coup, with a twin-turbo 3.0-litre diesel that produces 309bhp. A range-topping M6 Gran Coup will follow late next year, powered by the same 552bhp twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 used in the M5. Some markets will also get the option of all-wheel drive.
Inside, BMW has used the 6-series Gran Coups additional length and height to provide adequate seating for four adults. The rear bench offers up a third three-point belt to allow for up to five occupants a layout that BMW describes as four plus one. The seats, both front and rear, are mounted slightly higher than in the 6-series coup and convertible for improved visibility. Boot space is put at 460 litres 60 less than the 5-series saloon.
The Gran Coup will be launched at the Geneva motor show in March next year

BMW, Toyota confirm engine link

BMW and Toyota have confirmed their engine technology collaboration plans. The two automotive giants will supply engines to each other, with BMW offering its 1.6 and 2.0-litre diesel engines to Toyota Motor Europe in exchange for the Japanese co
mpanys hybrid technology and expertise.
BMWs engine supply will begin in 2014 and will be installed in certain Toyota-produced vehicles planned for sale in the European market as part of Toyotas planned expansion of its diesel-powered range.
The deal is described as a mid-to-long-term collaboration and the two companies will carry out joint-research in the field of next-generation lithium-ion battery technologies. The scope of the deal could be broadened to include other projects.
In a joint-press conference in Tokyo, BMWs sales and marketing chief Ian Robertson said, As we see it, both companies set the benchmark in complementary fields. Toyota has a wealth of experience to offer when it comes to battery technology, and the BMW Group has long been at the forefront developing some of the most technologically advanced clean diesel engines available.
Representing TMC, President Akio Toyoda said, "It is a great joy and a thrill to enter into this mid-to-long-term collaborative relationship with BMW. In the spirit of contributing to furthering the development of the auto industry and society, both companies will bring their wide-ranging knowledge, starting with that concerning environmental technologies, to the table and make even better cars."
The deal was announced as BMW celebrates 30 years in Japan. The Munich marquee launched its new BMW ActiveHybrid 5 at this weeks Tokyo Motor Show.

Lexus launch in India confirmed

Toyota has officially confirmed that it will introduce the Lexus brand in India by 2013. The Japanese carmaker has been evaluating the feasibility of its luxury brand in India for several years now and has finally decided to go ahead with the launch. We have been watching India with keen interest and we are happy to announce that we will bring Lexus to India in 2013 confirmed Yukitoshi Funo, executive vice-president of Toyota Motor Corporation.
The Lexus range will be sold through dedicated dealerships, though several Toyota dealers are likely to take up the franchise to take advantage of their service set up that requires common equipment for both brands. However, Toyota will take a very cautious and diligent approach to appointing dealerships. We would rather have a few, quality dealerships than a large number of mediocre outlets said Funo who also emphasised that he wanted to differentiate Lexus from its German rivals. Last month Kazuo Ohara, who oversees the Lexus brand globally, made a visit to India and gave the green light after intense market research, which included studying the dealer and service outlets of other brands.
Toyota plans to follow a top-down strategy and the initial plan is to introduce the LS saloon and RX SUV, both premium luxury models. This is likely to be followed by the GS executive luxury saloon which competes directly with the E-class and 5-series.
The company will initially bring the Lexus range as imports or completely built-up (CBU) units to test the market before considering local assembly. We need consider local production to compete with the others in the market, but this is still being studied, said Funo. It is likely that the compact IS models will be locally assembled in time.
The initial feedback and market studies for the Lexus brand have been very encouraging. The Indian consumers awareness of Lexus is quite surprising and much more than we anticipated, said Funo. However, the challenge will be to price the cars competitively, especially since Lexus will initially import cars and will be at a cost disadvantage in comparison to rival luxury brands that locally assemble and hence pay lower duty. Also, there is no diesel engine in the Lexus range which could be another disadvantage. However, Lexus will introduce its hybrid technology, which could click with customers looking for the ultimate in refinement.

New BMW 3-series review, test drive

Its encouraging that the sixth-generation BMW 3-series, despite its very obvious eco credentials and its numerous technical innovations, is still just a good-looking saloon that drives rather beautifully at heart.

At first, the new saloon may seem like business as usual with a slick and elegant new style that looks both familiar yet more thrusting. But beneath its new suit, the F30 3-series is dazzlingly different and superior to the car it replaces in every single area you can imagine. Its more comfortable and more dynamically capable than before.

The new range will include the entry-level 2-litre petrol (320i) and the efficient 2-litre diesel (320d). We drove the 320d in the UK, which was only available in Sport trim with the new paddle-shift gearbox and top-spec chassis and steering systems fitted (optional adaptive dampers and sport-spec servotronic steering). BMW also arranged for us to drive a 328i, a 242bhp version of the 2-litre petrol, although it is not clear if this engine will make it to India.

The first thing you become aware of when driving the new 3-series is that theres an incredible lack of inertia when on the move. However, it feels quite amazingly light on its feet and this can make it seem ever so slightly insubstantial as a result.

It may not be as fast on paper with a 0-100kph time of 7.6sec as compared to 5.9sec for the 328i but unless youre really going for it in the 328i, the 320d feels the brawnier of the two on the road. The steering felt lighter and fingertip easy on the petrol variant compared to the diesel. The accelerator felt so delicate underfoot, the gearbox so smooth in its machinations, you almost feel like a passenger in the car as it wafts gracefully from one destination to the next.

Select Sport and it instantly feels even more alive, not just beneath your backside and feet, but at the tips of your fingers as well. And if youre feeling truly in the mood, theres a Sport+ setting available in this model as well, which brings even crisper responses from the steering, gearbox and throttle, and turns the traction control to a more exciting setting for good measure.

Compared to the petrol variant, the diesel saloon has more punch in the low- to mid-range, emits just as unentertaining a noise and for all other intents and purposes feels similar. The same fantastic range of chassis setups, light but lovely steering, superb optional eight-speed gearbox; ability to switch from smooth motorway cruiser to crisp B-road bruiser, and pretty much anything in between, all at the flick of a button.

So should you buy one? If Superman drove a car, in fact, hed probably drive a new BMW 320d. And the rest of us would be more than happy with any other member of the range. Because be in no doubt, a new world leader has arrived and it may take a while for the others to catch up.

Big end-of-year discounts on luxury cars

Big end-of-year discounts on luxury cars The luxury car market is full of serious discounts this month and leading the way is the German trio. Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi are offering selected models at prices difficult to resist.
Leading the way is Mercedes-Benz with the E200 CGI. The premium saloon is being offered with a Rs 5.5-lakh cash discount and a petro card worth Rs 2.5 lakh (3,500 litres approximately). This adds up to a massive Rs 8-lakh benefit. The base petrol variant will now cost you only Rs 40 lakh as against Rs 45 lakh on-road Mumbai. The E200 CGI has the same engine used in the C-class developing 183bhp from its 1.8-litre unit. Add the luxuries and space of an E for just about Rs 5 lakh more than the similarly specced C-class and it makes a compelling case for itself.
Audi is offering a Rs 5 lakh discount on the A4 petrol models too. Thats approximately 15 percent off the sticker price for the entry-level Audi 1.8 TFSI. It now retails at just around Rs 30 lakh. The 1.8 TFSI develops 160bhp and 25.5kgm of torque.
Not one to miss the boat, BMW will sell you the 320i and 320d Highline models with a Rs 4.5-lakh discount and the Corporate Edition with Rs 2 lakh knocked off the price tag. The 5-series too is being offered with a Rs 1.5-lakh discount. The base variants of the driver-focused 3-series are now priced on par with the X1. The 320i develops 154bhp and 20.4kgm of torque and the 320d churns out 174bhp from its 2.0-litre engine.
BMW sold 330 units of the 5-series in September and Mercedes matched it with 333 units of the E-class. Audi managed to sell 259 units of A4 in the same period, while the 3-series sold 220 units.
