Although affordable for a Ducati, and a step in the right direction, the Monster 795 could have been priced even more competitively in a segment which is fast filling up with many able rivals.

Jaguar Land Rover's stunning expo lineup

jaguar stunning landrover at auto expo
Exhibiting alongside parent company Tata Motors, Jaguar Land Rovers display is bound to have won the brand a whole host of new fans. India is an important emerging market for Jaguar and the manufacturer seems to have pulled out all the stops to impress Auto Expo goers. The display includes the facelifted XF, the XJ and Jaguars most powerful production car yet, the wild 542bhp XKR-S. However, it is the pair of Jaguar concept cars that really drew eyeballs.

The first of these is the C-X75 hybrid supercar that will be built in partnership with Williams F1 team. Slated for future production, the low-slung supercar looks like it belongs in a sci-fi movie. Its a range-extender hybrid that uses a pair of mini turbines instead of a conventional combustion engine as a generator for the electric motors. It shouldnt be dismissed as an anaemic eco car though it produces 778bhp and can hit a top speed of 330kmh.

Sharing the limelight with the C-X75 is the C-X16 which is a Porsche 911-sized sports car.  The concepts extremely tight skinning, sloping roofline and rear haunches look really smashing in the flesh. Power is courtesy a supercharged, direct-injection, 376bhp 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine. However, a 'push to pass' button on the steering wheel frees up energy stored via an F1-style Kinetic Energy Recovery System, and kicks in an electric motor that boosts power by 94bhp for up to 10 seconds. Performance is a claimed 0-100kph time of 4.4 sec with top speed limited to 300kph.

The adjacent Land Rover stand had its own show-stoppers as well with the spotlight on the DC100 and the DC100 Sport concepts. The concepts, first shown at the 2011 Frankfurt Motorshow, point to what the next generation Defender (due in 2015) will look like. If the design is anything to go by, the new model will share few visual elements with its legendary predecessor. The angular cues remain but the whole treatment is very futuristic. Land Rover is yet to fine tune the styling but has said it wants to design a product that is as relevant in Mumbai as it is in California.

Elsewhere in the stand, the recently-launched Evoque garnered its fair share of attention too.

BMW launches M5 Sport saloon

BMW has launched its new M5 sports saloon at the 11th Auto Expo in New Delhi. Like all previous M5s, the new car's styling is subtle but aggressive in its details, most notably the lower air intakes three gaping ducts to flow cool air into the radiator, oil cooler and turbochargers. 19-inch alloy wheels come as standard fitment.

The M5 features a twin-turbo, 4.4-litre V8 that offers 552bhp and 69.4kgm of max torque, and the sports saloon can hit 100kph in 4.4 seconds, and 200kph in 13sec (manufacturers claims). The new M5 gets a power boost of 10 percent and torque figures are up by 30 percent compared to the previous-generation, V10-powered E60 M5.

The transmission is a seven-speed, dual-clutch unit with steering-wheel-mounted paddle-shifters, which drives through a new Active M differential with electronically-controlled, multi-plate, limited-slip differential. Depending on the driving situation the diff can lock between 0 and 100 per cent, says BMW.

An M-specific chassis set-up includes M-tuned Servotronic steering, cockpit-adjustable dynamic damping and stability control with an M Dynamic setting. Steering wheel buttons that can be programmed with chassis, engine and diff settings can now memorise two individual set-ups as compared to the single setting option on the earlier M Drive button.

The all-new BMW M5 has been priced at Rs 95.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Tata unveils Safari Storme at the Auto Expo

Tata unveils Safari Storme at the Expo
Taking centrestage at the Tata stand is the Safari Storme. The Storme is not an all-new Safari but a throroughly revised version of the existing SUV. Among the biggest changes to the vehicle is the adoption of Tata's modern X2 platform that also underpins the Aria. The switch to the X2 platform should reap huge benefits in terms of dynamics and overall refinement.
Tata has also tweaked styling to make the Safari look contemporary. The nose is all-new with a different front grille and headlamp design. In silhouette, the Safari looks pretty similar to the outgoing model though the different side cladding are give aways of the new car. Styling changes to the rear include a new tail gate with the spare wheel now mounted under the body. A thick horizontal strip above the repositioned number plate is a noteworthy detail here. Dual chrome tipped exhausts complete the rear redesign.
Tata unveils Safari Storme at the ExpoThe interiors have received a makeover too with a revised dashboard design and plastics that seem to have improved in quality.
Powering the Safari Storme is the familiar 2.2-litre, 16-valve common-rail DiCOR engine on duty on other Tata cars. While peak power remains 140PS, the engine has been worked on to improve overall refinement which is something the Safari was in dire need of. Just how much better the new Safari is over the older car? To know the answer you;ll have to wait for our exhaustive road test.
Other significant exhibits at the stall were the Manza diesel-hybrid concept and the new 1.05-litre 3-cylinder variant of the 1.4 DiCOR engine.

Mini officially launched in India

mini launching at auto expo
Iconic British car-maker Mini has finally entered the Indian car market. The BMW-owned manufacturer will bring in four models, namely the Cooper, Cooper S, Cooper Convertible and Cooper S Countryman into India as completely built units (CBUs). The Mini range will be sold through three exclusive dealerships Deutsche Motoren and Bird Automotive in New Delhi and Infinity Cars in Mumbai.

The Cooper hatchback is the most affordable car in the line-up. However, with an asking price of Rs 24.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Cooper is by no means cheap. Styling harks back to the original design; its classic yet looks contemporary at the same time. There are plenty of retro touches inside the cabin as well such as the large circular dials for the speedometer and tachometer. While the Mini Cooper can seat four, its small dimensions and three-door body style make it a car best suited to two occupants. The Mini Cooper comes with a 1.6-litre petrol engine that is good for 122bhp at 6000rpm and 16.3kgm of torque at 4250rpm. Those wanting more power can opt for the Mini Cooper S that features the same engine but with a twin-scroll turbocharger. Power is 184bhp at 5500rpm while max torque of 24.47kgm is produced between 1600-5000rpm. The Mini Cooper S has been priced at Rs 27.9 lakh.

The third model in the Mini line-up is the Cooper Convertible. The convertible adds the joy of open-top motoring to typical Mini charm. But given Indias extreme weather conditions, the Convertibles fabric roof could prove impractical. The Convertible comes powered by the same 1.6-litre, 122bhp petrol engine that does duty on the Mini Cooper.  Priced at Rs 29.99 lakh, the Cooper Convertible is still the cheapest convertible on sale in India today.

The Mini that makes most sense for India is the Cooper S Countryman. It features five doors with decent space for four occupants so it is sure to find favour with family buyers. Moreover, its raised ride height will do a better job at dealing with pothole-laden Indian roads. The Countryman costs Rs 31.99 lakh and uses a 184bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged engine.

Mini has not announced any plans yet of brining in its diesel powerplant, however the manufacturer has confirmed all India-bound cars will come with six-speed automatic transmissions.

Mahindra unveils REVA NXR at Expo

mahindra reva nxr at auto expo 2012
Mahindra showcased the production ready prototype of the NXR electric vehicle at the expo. The REVAi successor looks much more appealing and will have more variants too.
The badges of the production version have changed from the large REVA logo on the front grille to the Mahindra logo and the NXR logo with four leaves is used in the rear. The rest of the vehicle remains unchanged. The NXR uses parts from the Mahindra parts bin to keep costs in check. Despite this, making the NXR more appealing has made it a little more expensive. The company expects infrastructure support from the government to source, distribute and charge a range of electric vehicles and subsidy for its EV.
The NXR will be offered with three battery options small, medium and large to cater to a variety of driving ranges. There will be two kinds of batteries lithium ion and lead acid but Mahindra will focus more on lithium ion variants.
Engineers responsible for the NXRs development have also worked on the Verito electric vehicle. The conventional engine has been swapped with a 29KW (39.4bhp) electric motor. The company claims the Verito Electric has a range of 100km on full charge and a top speed of 86kph.

Mercedes-Benz took up all of Hall 15 and presented a vast array of cars for the Indian car buying public to gawk at.

Among the production models dished up were the SLS AMG roadster supercar the new, third-generation M-class and a customised S600 Pullman Guard. The star of the pavilion however was the Concept A-class a hatchback that previews the forthcoming design direction the brand is going to take. Built on the same MFA platform as the B-class that will soon be launched in India, the Concept A-class is likely to be sold in India in saloon form. And a swanky saloon it will be.

The car that attracted the most eyeballs, however, was the SLS AMG roadster. The SLS AMG coupe is famous for its gull-wing doors, so its good that the roadster version hasnt lost too much of the charm in having ditched them. The powertrain remains the same a 562bhp 6.2-litre V8 engine paired with a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission - and gets the soft-top roadster to 100kph in 3.8 seconds.

The new M-class improves on the previous version in almost every area, especially in size. Despite this, there are a number of technological improvements to keep emissions and fuel consumption in check. The ML has been introduced with a 3.0-litre diesel V6 that produces 255bhp and 63.2kgm. The styling is less aggressive, but more mature than before with softer edges and more chrome accents on the exterior.

The S600 Pullman Guard armoured limousine was on display as well. The gargantuan V12 limo is about as luxurious as a Mercedes can get, but it is also as tough as a tank, achieving VR6 and VR7 safety ratings the highest currently possible.

Mercedes-Benz also filled the large display hall with various other cars from its current range, like the SLK roadster and CLS four-door coupe, as well as racing cars like the C-class DTM car and the SLS GT3 touring car.

Triumph launches seven models for India

Triumph launches seven models for India
Click on the image to open.
British motorcycle manufacturer Triumph has unveiled its Indian range at the Auto Expo. It is offering seven models starting at a tempting Rs. 5.5 lakh, and will join other iconic brands like Harley Davidson and Ducati in the fast-growing niche motorcycle segment of the Indian two-wheeler market.

The range starts with the legendary Bonneville, powered by an 865cc, air-cooled parallel twin in traditional Bonneville fashion. The Street Triple and Daytona 675 are powered by 675cc inline-three cylinder motors while the Speed Triple gets a bigger 1050cc mill. Out of the three, at Rs 5.75 lakh the Speed Triple is the cheapest of the lot, while youll have to shell Rs eight lakh for its bigger capacity sibling Street Triple.

While the Speed and Street Triples are projected as street bikes, globally the Daytona 675 is aimed at the Japanese inline-four 600s, which should give it an edge in the Indian Market as none of the Japanese big four currently have a supersports offering in their lineups. Priced at an extremely attractive Rs seven lakh, the Daytona should successfully be able to fill the current void existing between a street model and full-blown litre-class offerings in India.

The Tiger 800XC is a dual-purpose motorcycle, powered by an 800cc inline-three engine producing 95bhp, priced at Rs 11.4 lakh.

Two cruisers round up Triumphs range the smaller of the two being the 1700cc Thunderbird Storm priced at Rs 17 lakh. The range-topping Rocket III is pure indulgence though, its powered by a 2300cc inline-three motor which at 22.5kgm, churns out more torque than a Honda Accord saloon and at Rs 22 lakh, costs about the same too. No second guessing what wed pick then!

The range is expected to go on sale by mid-2012 and Triumph is planning to offer in-house financing options for its customers as well.

Lotus Elan

Lotus Elan is the name of two convertible cars and one anchored arch coup produced by Lotus Cars. The aboriginal Type 26, 26R Antagonism adaptation (of the S1 Elan), 36R Antagonism adaptation (of the S2 Elan), 36 Anchored Arch Coupe, 45 Drop Arch Coupe, and the "Type 50" +2 Coupe, about 1962 to 1975, are frequently accepted as the '60s Elans. The Type M100 from 1989 to 1995, is additionally frequently accepted as the 1990s Elan. The aboriginal Elan was alien in 1962 as a roadster, although an alternative auto was offered in 1963 and a coup adaptation in 1965. The two bench Lotus Elan replaced the elegant, but capricious and big-ticket to aftermath Lotus Elite. It was the aboriginal Lotus alley car to use the now acclaimed animate courage sub anatomy with a fibreglass body. At 1,500 lb (680 kg), the Elan embodied the Colin Chapman minimum weight architecture philosophy. Initial versions of the Elan were additionally accessible as a kit to be accumulated by the customer. The Elan was technologically avant-garde with a twin-cam 1558 cc engine, 4-wheel disc brakes, and 4-wheel absolute suspension. The Lotus-Ford Twin Cam agent was based on Ford's Pre-Cross-flow 4 butt 1500 cc engine, with a Lotus-inspired Cosworth admixture twin-cam head. Ford EcoSport revealed

Ford EcoSport revealed
Here are the first ever images of Fords all new global vehicle, the EcoSport. This next-generation compact SUV will take centre stage at Ford's high-tech interactive stand which will cover around 1,400 square metres.

The EcoSport is the latest One Ford global product, a vehicle designed to help expand Ford's footprint in the world's fastest-growing auto markets, including India. It will be the second of eight products Ford plans to bring to India by mid-decade for which the company will invest US$ 2 billion in the development and production of the new vehicles.

Ford EcoSport revealed
Known internally as the B515, this next-generation EcoSport is built on Fords award-winning global compact car platform (B2E) developed with Mazda, which majors on weight saving and torsional rigidity.

Though the EcoSport shares plenty of bits with the new Fiesta saloon under the skin, it looks completely different, and you would be hard-pressed to tell that the two have anything in common.

What is plainly clear is that the design definitely has SUV written all over it. The five-door EcoSport gets chunky, technical styling, and a very space-efficient interior. A large trapezoidal front grille dominates the front end, while the front headlights are slimmer and more technical than on the Fiesta.

The lower front bumper and side sills get cladding, while there are also muscular wheel arches and a fixed spare wheel at the back to further emphasise its off-road intentions. The roof gets chrome rails and the rear side windows have the familiar Ford upwards kink in the window line.

Ford EcoSport revealed
Ford will debut a new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, direct-injection turbo-petrol motor in the EcoSport a world debut that will be capable of developing power similar to a bigger, 1.6-litre motor. It will also deliver class-leading fuel economy. The car will also get the 1.5-litre diesel engine that currently does duty in the Fiesta.

The EcoSport, which cleverly combines the charm of an SUV, the frugality of small engines, cutting-edge styling and a very affordable price tag somewhere in the region of Rs 7-9 lakh, has the makings of a winner. At that price, it will provide a genuine alternative to a midsize car or even a premium hatchback.

Though the Premier Rio was technically the first compact SUV in the market, the EcoSport will be the first serious player in this virgin niche. This could give Ford a big first-mover advantage in a segment that could explode.

Plymouth Barracuda

The Plymouth Barracuda is a 2-door sports car that was bogus by the Plymouth analysis of the Chrysler Corporation from 1964-1974.The first-generation Barracuda, a fastback A-body auto based on the Plymouth Valiant, had a characteristic wraparound aback bottle and was accessible from 1964-1966.The second-generation 1967-1969 Barracuda, admitting still Valiant-based, was heavily redesigned. Second-generation A-body cars were accessible in fastback, notchback, and convertible versions. The 1970-1974 E-body Barracuda, no best Valiant-based, was accessible as a auto and a convertible, both of which were actual altered from the antecedent models. 1974 was the final archetypal year for the Barracuda.

FIRST DRIVE Skoda Yeti 4X2 review, test drive

skoda yeti 2012 Like its Himalayan namesake, the Skoda Yeti is a rare sight. Its problem is that it is too much of a crossover too small to be an SUV, too big to be a hatchback and priced well above many mid-size luxury cars. Skoda hopes this new more affordable 110bhp, front-wheel drive version will lead to more Yeti sightings on our roads. Priced at Rs 14.32 lakh (ex showroom, Delhi) for the top Ambition variant (the lower Active is Rs 13.46 lakh), the Yeti 4x2 is approximately Rs 2.5 lakh cheaper than its all-wheel-drive sibling. Certainly worth a look, then.
skoda yeti 2012
Key differences between the front-wheel and all-wheel-drive versions are that the former comes with afive-speed manual instead of the 4WD versions six-speeder. By deleting the all-wheel drive gear, the Yeti sheds 98 kilos too. So, despite being 30bhp down on its all-wheel-driven sibling, youll never feel the need for more power. Theres little lag to speak of, the engine is pretty free-revving and pulls hard all the way to the redline, and the 25.5kgm of torque (down from 32.6kgm) is more than adequate for the Yetis 1445kg kerb weight. The 0-100kph time of 11.76sec is entirely respectable and only one second off the more powerful 4x4s time. Theres little difference in refinement too, the engine remaining quiet at low and cruising speeds with a bit of a growl when you accelerate hard.

skoda yeti 2012 side view
Its only when you try a Formula 1 start from the lights that you get a hint that it is a two-wheel drive. You also get a bit of torque steer as the turbo kicks in, and under extreme cornering, you will miss the extra grip and stability the 4x4 gives you, especially in the wet. Still, ESP is standard, and cuts in before you have any unintentional off-road excursions. A welcome improvement is how this Yeti doesnt stall as easily as the 4x4 version when you get off the clutch and this makes it infinitely easier to drive in traffic.

skoda yeti 2012 interior and steering
The rest is the Yeti as we know it high-quality interiors, practical, sorted ride; it is genuinely one of the best Skodas for India. Theres no differentiation on the outside either, not even 4x2 badge. The Ambition is well equipped too theres two airbags, a CD player, hill descent control, parking sensors at the rear and powered everything, but doesnt get the extra kit that helps make the Yeti special. The lower-spec Active doesnt get as much kit, but gets alloys, ABS and two airbags.

skoda yeti 2012
We also think Skoda missed an opportunity to introduce a DSG auto gearbox. Considering the Yetis city-friendly nature, an automatic would be very appropriate. Also, a small irritant is how all new Skodas, the Yeti included, get a shrill horn rather than the old parp horn that sounded so much more expensive.

skoda yeti 2012 rear view
Speaking of which, the Yeti still isnt a value proposition and remains a niche product. It is for people who understand its vast range of talents, all packed into a compact footprint, and dont mind paying a premium for it. So, does it really make sense to offer a less talented, cheaper version? We think it does. The Yeti 4x2 doesnt give away much in terms of its on-road abilities, which is what most owners will it use for. The build quality is really special too and is what distances the Yeti from bigger, cheaper and more practical SUVs, and the price is now more realistic for its size. If only it had an automatic.
